é The Loretto - or Santa casa - was built in 1626-1631. Fifty years later it had become a place of pilgrimage and was surrounded by cloisters. The Church of the Nativity was built by K. I. Dientzenhofer (1734-35). The attraction of the Loretto is heightened by its treasury and its carillon.
é Golden Lane is famous for the little houses built into the fortifying wall. From the 16th century the Castle riflemen lived here, later craftsmen and even the poor of the city. For a short time Franz Kafka lived in one of the little houses.
é The church of St. Nicholas in the Little Quarter was built in 1704-1756 by the Dientzenhofers, father and son, and it is a peak example of Prague illusive baroque. The frescos in the church dome - the Glorification of the Most Holy Trinity - are by F. X. Balko from 1751.
é The church of Our Lady Victorious was the first Prague baroque church (1611-13), and it was built by German Lutherans. In 1624 it was given to the Order of the Barefoot Carmelite monks and rebuilt in baroque style. It became world-famous thanks to the statue of the Prague Infant Jesus.
é The Charles Bridge was founded by Charles IV. in 1357 on the site of the former Judith Bridge. It is lined with a gallery of 30 statues, most of which originated at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries. The Old Town Bridge Tower, built by Petr Parléø in 1380, stands on the first pillar. |
